Energising the transformation of NRS
Nuclear Restoration Service (NRS), is responsible for decommissioning Britain’s first-generation nuclear sites. The organisation had been managing a fragmented legacy IT estate, as well as an overreliance on paper-based workflows which hindered its efficiency.
We worked with NRS to deliver a major digital transformation project which modernised its IT infrastructure using Microsoft 365 and cloud.
Energising the transformation of NRS
Nuclear Restoration Service (NRS), is responsible for decommissioning Britain’s first-generation nuclear sites. The organisation had been managing a fragmented legacy IT estate, as well as an overreliance on paper-based workflows which hindered its efficiency.
We worked with NRS to deliver a major digital transformation project which modernised its IT infrastructure using Microsoft 365 and cloud. The delivery resulted in Exception supporting NRS by migrating its data and applications to a Microsoft Azure cloud platform and enhancing security and scalability. We also helped NRS to replace paper-based forms with Microsoft Power Platform-based alternatives, reducing staff processing times and increasing efficiency.
The project has yielded tangible results for NRS. Cloud hosting has been streamlined and has slashed costs by half, while the digitisation of paper-based working has resulted in substantial efficiency and accuracy improvements across NRS’ various sites. Additionally, the project has laid the groundwork for future innovation by establishing a solid digital foundation for NRS to further optimise its activities.

Draining DWQR's legacy
Scotland places a high value on clean water, and the quality of its drinking water is robustly enforced. However, the Drinking Water Quality Regulator's (DWQR) aging Oracle system, built in the mid-2000s, was costly to run, slow, and hindered their ability to identify emerging quality and safety trends.
We swiftly developed a cloud-based solution for DWQR, providing immediate improvements to how the regulator delivers its mandate.

We swiftly developed a cloud-based solution for DWQR, providing immediate improvements to how the regulator delivers its mandate. In addition to cloud design, architecture and implementation, our solution also included legacy app migration, data migration and new application development.
The new solution now offers DWQR better data quality, faster analysis, and a remarkable 95% cost saving compared to the Oracle system it replaced. Additionally, it boasts enhanced security, automated data intake, and superior analytical capabilities. And crucially, it aligns with the Scottish Government's Cloud First programme, promoting cloud adoption and superior cybersecurity benefits.
This was an extremely important project for DWQR. Our previous system had been in place for over 15 years and was vital to every aspect of our operations. Exception produced a solution that now handles the complexity of our data and reporting in a way that is both user friendly and efficient. Importantly for us, its cloud-based nature means it's easily adaptable as our needs change over time. The days of being stuck with an archaic legacy system are behind us.
